How Do We Face Uncertainty Today, and End Up with Opportunity Tomorrow?
Many people have the tendency to get too comfortable in their day job. As we’ve seen with Covid-19 in 2020, and the way it’s reshaping our society, things are changing quickly. What happens when life turns your reality upside down and you must face uncertainty? Are you prepared? Have you done the self-work that will help you overcome the adversity and create an opportunity?
Everyone has heard the saying “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” Starting your own business from scratch requires squeezing a lot of lemons. Especially when you go all in like we did. Let’s just say, sometimes the lemonade is sour. On the other hand, if you work hard, put in the effort, and don’t give up, the payoff can be sweet on the other side.
I always wondered what would happen if we just left everything behind and followed our dream of being free to travel and live the life we always wanted to live. About two years ago, my husband lost his job unexpectedly. Even though it was difficult news at the time, it ended up being a blessing in disguise. It pushed us out of our comfort zone to do something new. We had already been tossing around the idea of taking our side hustle home business to the road and doing what inspires us.
Facing the Unknown
It was decided that we would leave our comfort zone and face the unknown. We took a BIG leap of faith and bought a motorhome to live in fulltime. I homeschool our teenage son, so we can be flexible as to where we go. It was a little scary at first, and still is at times. We just keep our faith and believe that everything will work out.
In 2018, we packed up the motorhome with all the things that we needed for nomadic living and hit the road. Where were we headed? We had no idea, we had a state in mind, but that was about it. If you do ever decide to try full time RVing, you’ll learn quickly about what we call “Jell-O-plans” haha. Most plans are Jell-O when you’re a full timer. Their shaky, soft, and are hard to keep on the plate. It’s not always like that, but it can be at times.
There are so many more details going into this lifestyle than we realized. Doing something this extreme takes diligent, strategic planning, flexibility, and is not for the faint of heart. Every day is a learning opportunity, and the path each person creates is their own.
What to Do When You Face Uncertainty?
If you’ve found yourself in a life changing moment, like we did, and you know that something needs to change and quickly. Find a skill that you love, or something that inspires you greatly. Then take the first step into making it a reality. No matter how small it is, take that first step. Take action towards using that to better your life, and turn it into a side hustle, or a full-blown business like we did. If you already have the makings of a small business, do whatever it takes to create growth, and until it can sustain you. Sure, it may not start off replacing your income right away. As time goes on, it could grow into that.
Staying Positive and Having Faith Is the Key
”There is a power in knowing that there will always be a positive outcome for you.”
Make sure you teach yourself how to stay positive and have unwavering faith. There is a power in knowing that there will always be a positive outcome for you. You’ve made it this far. You’ll make it much further; I know you will. Have confidence in yourself to handle any adversity or uncertainty. Know that the plan you come up with, or your idea to turn it around will work. Be flexible if it doesn’t work perfect on the first try, and just think out of the box to find another angle.
Be Willing to Learn Something New
Always be a student and be willing to learn something new. If you don’t know how to accomplish something, don’t be afraid to learn what you need to learn.
I once heard a great example of this. Two men are asked to build a fence. One says, “I can’t, because I don’t know how.” The other man says, ” I can build a fence because I’ve seen one.” The first man is not willing to build the fence because he is not willing to learn how, either by being taught or by trial and error. The second man can build a fence because he’s seen one. He knows how it turns out and what it needs to look like in the end. It may not go perfect in the beginning, but he’ll figure it out, and it may be better than the fence he originally saw. The best part of all, he did it himself!
