Knowing Your Value
In today’s world where the digital universe runs everything. Learning the value in yourself is a fundamental concept in being a successful entrepreneur and just living a happy life in general. Our value does not come from how many followers we have, or how many likes and comments a post gets. Yes, it helps our content be seen among the clutter of the internet, but it’s not our value. If you help one person with the message you’re putting out there, that is what matters. It’s who you were that was the value to that person.
Social Media vs Reality
When I hear people being so concerned over losing followers, I can’t help but think how social media seems to be affecting our self-worth, and our society. One thing to realize, is when someone unfollows us, it’s not personal. Our content was just not what they were looking for, it’s no big deal. If your goal is to gain followers for a business or a brand, you want genuine followers that connect with you on a deeper level. Their view of you will be more as a friend, someone they relate to, or a product they are truly interested in. They will also engage with you more than the people who are just after the numbers.
I think it’s important to relay this to our children. Especially the ones who are old enough to be on social media. I had a talk one day with my teenage son about the difference in real life, and social media, pertaining to friends and followers. He has an entrepreneur spirit too and is launching his own platform, TeenEntrepreneurs.com. We talked about how these things are trivial and meaningless on a certain level. He’s very levelheaded, so he already got it. I figured he did, I just wanted to have that conversation to reaffirm it.
Our Value Is in Who We Are To Ourselves, Not to Other People
We need to remember that our value is in who we are to ourselves, and not who other people think we are. When you’re inspired to be who you are because you like who you are, the world will notice. I think this is something that society seems to struggle with, due to the prevalence of devices and social media. So many people seem to want to be someone else. I love technology just as much as the next person, but I also think it can be taken too far. Some people can get so consumed with it, that it can skew their view on reality, and real life.
Limiting our time on screens will also help us to put more focus on the things we want to accomplish in life, in turn, adding more value to the moments to our lives. This is difficult for an entrepreneur. Especially because so many of our tools are wrapped up in technology. Find balance, it will be your friend.
